MAYBE OBVIOUS BUT
Important

This may look like not a very revealing post. However for some of you it may be not less important than other topics.

Among the questions I have receive, there are also those relating to the tools I use for designing and drawing my patterns. So here I will show them to you.

Drawing

The first and obvious tool is a pencil. Since couple of years I use Pentel Graphgear 1000 and I like it a lot.

The tool which is very helpful in drawing straight lines of the grids, measuring etc. is sartorial meter.

Another tool which is not a surprise is a compass for drawing grids, geometric constructions, circles etc.

Markers

For drawing the grids and the pattern precisely, I use Faber-Castell Multimark 1523 permament markers, S and M.

Sometimes I use thick Letraset Promarkers for coloring the pattern just to have an overall picture of it.

It helps me to see more clearly how the planning carved and perforated areas “play” together, so to speak.

When using any of markers I mentioned for drawing on gourds you have to be aware that sometimes it may be difficult to clean it completely. Depending on your painting and carving technique, this may be a problem or not.

Absolutely great and very helpful tool that is not so obvious like the above ones is Adirondack Alcohol Ink Fillable Pen by Tim Holtz. In Internet you can find Tim Holtz Alcohol Ink BLENDING PEN Marker which is probably the same thing.
That is a brilliant tool when I need to precisely erase the marker while drawing grid or pattern. I use it very often.

They say you need Alcohol Blending Solution to fill it but much cheaper way is to use Isopropyl Alcohol.

For some of the patterns I also use circle shapes drawing stencil.

That is all what I use for designing and drawing my patterns. I don’t use any stencils for drawing curves or others shapes.

If you have any questions or if you know any other useful tools which you use,do not hesitate to write a comment.
